Functional Storage Space and 3 ways to Improve Home Storage
When working with clients, we recommend several “must-haves” while deciding on different features that will enhance their life at home. However, a consistent request and personal favorite design feature to incorporate in every home is functional storage space. As an interior designer and mom with a growing family, I can attest to the importance of great storage solutions. Regardless of your needs, we can tell you from experience that planning for storage in your new build or remodel will help optimize your space and benefit your overall living experience. From storage closets to custom cabinetry, there are countless ways to include storage in your home’s design plan.
1. Custom Cabinetry
Here at RI Studio, we don’t believe in the infamous “junk drawer”. We encourage you to consider how custom cabinets can provide plenty of storage space for you and your family’s specific needs. When designing custom cabinets, it’s important to really think about what you need to store and where you want to put it. For a kitchen, consider installing roll-out drawers under the sink to reach items way in the back. Long drawers are great for items like wrapping paper and adding plugs in drawers is ideal for charging devices or hair tools. We would also recommend cabinets with outlets for wall-hung vacuums to make cleaning less of a chore. If you have small children, try having step stools built into their bathroom vanities for their ease of use.
2. Built-In Shelving
For books, memorabilia, family photos, and accessories, built-in shelving is a must. They provide a clean and elevated look for all your décor items, whether in a living room, bedroom, mudroom, or home office. You can even make your built-ins stand out by adding a contrasting wallpaper or paint color behind the shelves. Storage can be stylish, after all!
3. Storage Closets
While built-in shelves are perfect for storing books and beautiful décor, storage closets are the solution for larger, less aesthetically pleasing items. It’s helpful to have closets near the front entryway and back door where guests can store umbrellas, jackets, or anything bulky. For linens, consider a linen closet in your bathroom or in the hallway that leads to your bedroom. We know that cleaning supplies can be an issue, so think about adding a cleaning closet with plenty of shelving in a hallway, laundry room, or mudroom.
Life is better decluttered, and the best way to promote a clean, polished home is by creating plenty of room for storage. There is no such thing as too much!
